The principle of botulinum toxin (botox) consists of using the muscle relaxation properties of this product.
The aim of botox injections is to reduce the action of the muscles located in the forehead and eyebrows, in order to reduce forehead wrinkles and eye wrinkles. Such use of botox makes it possible to smooth out skin reliefs and thus obtain a rejuvenating effect by releasing muscular tension.
From a more global point of view, you should know that the position of the eyebrows is ensured by a balance between two opposing forces, made up of depressor muscles (located in the vicinity of the eyebrows), and a levator muscle (the muscle frontal).
Horizontal wrinkles are due to contraction of the levator frontalis muscle. Vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows are caused by contraction of the depressor muscles.
The essential goal of botox is to reduce wrinkles and fine lines at rest and not to prevent muscle contraction: we will therefore judge the result of botox mainly on the appearance of wrinkles at rest.
With regard to the balance between the depressor and elevator muscles, botulinum toxin, by attenuating the action of a muscle group, reduces wrinkles due to these muscles but releases the action of the antagonist muscles: the goal is to treat muscular balance and thus obtain facial harmonization.
Treatment with botulinum toxin must be designed and managed over time: it is therefore advisable to treat gradually and avoid the risk of “overdoing it” during the first injections.
It is better to have a moderately effective first botox session than too effective: it is therefore not desirable to want optimal results from the first botulinum toxin injection.
In some cases, it may be necessary to perform several sessions of botox injections before best adapting the possibilities of the product to each patient.
The botox treatment will be carried out at the cosmetic surgeon's office.
This treatment consists of a series of botox injections on the face. The needle is fine, and botox injections are usually not very painful.
The duration of the treatment is of the order of a few minutes.
the results of botox are visible after a few days but for around 15 days, the effects of botox on the face can be variable (even asymmetrical at certain times) before eventually stabilizing.
The botox result obtained after the first botox session lasts on average 3 to 6 months at the end of which, the botox injection can be repeated.
Botox injections must be performed several times with intervals of 3 to 6 months in order to obtain a certain stability of the result. From the second botox injection, the results can be more lasting (6 to 9 months). Botox injections should then be repeated every 3 to 6 months.
It is however recommended to never bring botox injection sessions closer than 3 months to avoid creating resistance to the product through a “vaccine effect”. The appearance of the result can be stabilized beyond 3 injections but in certain cases, it is necessary to use at least 8 to 10 botox injections to obtain a certain stabilization of the result.
Conversely, it should be noted that if botox injections are stopped, the treated muscle regains its function before the injections.
